Introduction to Beekeeping

In this 6 week course, taught by Ellen Bell of Bell Farm, you will learn everything you need to know to get started keeping a hive of honeybees. Topics will include purchasing bees and equipment, how to install a package of bees, hive management throughout the year, disease and pest control, winter care, honey production, and more. The class is geared toward those who have never kept bees, but first year beekeepers will also find much to be gained from reviewing the fundamentals. The class will also feature a number of guest speakers who will share important information about keeping bees in Iowa.

All class attendees will receive a one year's membership for free in the Iowa Honey Producer's Association. Optional: A book for the course can be purchased for $8 and will be available on the first night of class. The library also has several copies of the book available for checkout at no cost.

Please plan to attend all 6 consecutive Mondays. Make-up class, if necessary, will be held on February 24th.

Registration is required. **Registration is limited to residents of Altoona and rural Polk County for the first 7 days of registration. Open registration begins 3 weeks before the event.**
